Gaining Experience in the Racing Industry

In 2012, Michael obtained his trainer's license and began renting Crotanstown Stud near The Curragh in 2013. His keen eye for talent and strategic acquisitions have led to notable successes with horses such as Blue De Vega, Now Or Never, and Letters Of Note—early stakes winners purchased at value prices. More recently, Steel Bull captured attention by winning a maiden race just three weeks after being acquired, followed by a Group 3 Molecomb Stakes victory seven days later. Twilight Jet is another standout, highlighting Michael's ability to develop top-tier racehorses.

About

The Early Days

Michael O'Callaghan is a prominent Irish racehorse trainer known for his rapid ascent in the world of flat racing. Hailing from Tralee, County Kerry, Michael's passion for horses ignited at the age of 12 after attending a riding lesson. This early interest led him to work at Fran McElligott's riding and trekking centre in The Spa, where he guided tourists on beach rides. Seeking more experience, he joined the yard of renowned trainer Tom Cooper during his school years.

Here he dedicated summers, weekends, and free time to immerse himself in horse racing. After completing his Leaving Certificate, Michael furthered his education at Coolmore Stud and the Irish National Stud's Thoroughbred Breeding course, solidifying his commitment to a career in the racing industry.
